What Is Social Media Free eBook
This is a good little eBook on Social Media that was published in November of 2007. This book would be an excellent selection for anyone who is just getting started with Social Media or needs a little help in understand all the elements that it encompasses. Antony Mayfield and iCrossings work through several areas in [...]
Social Web Analytics eBook
Philip Sheldrake has written and released a free eBook on Social media monitoring.
Sheldrake does an excellent job of putting the impact of social media into prespective while supplying the reader with resources to review on their own. More businesses need to take note of social media and the affects it is having on marketing and [...]
Why my social media intern must work in St. Louis
Since posting a job for a social media intern in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s newsroom, I’ve been asked twice whether that person will be required to work in St. Louis. It’s a fair question. Certainly in the 21st Century it’s conceivable that a job like that could be done remotely. The Chicago Tribune folks who take care of Colonel Tribune’s persona on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, Digg and other sites could probably do the work in Michigan as easily as Michigan Avenue. Scott Hepburn, who blogs
North Central NAMA Setup
Hello from Minneapolis and the North Central NAMA Chapter meeting. We’re in the cafeteria/meeting room at Colle+McVoy. This is actually setup time. The tables being set up here are for our speed networking session which will follow my presentation on social networking. We’re going to get to know each other very well by the end of the evening. I think we’ve got at least 40 people reserved so far. That’s great for a chapter meeting. As I understand it we’ll have students here too for the first
Public Diplomacy & Web 2.0
I’ve noted before that State Department is making use of Web 2.0 social networking tools and in this latest example they are using the Twitter service to promote public diplomacy: For those of you on Twitter, you can experience public diplomacy in real-time as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, Colleen Graffy, travels to Bucharest and twitters along the way. It is “International Education Week” in Romania, and she will be meeting with students, Fulbright scholars, con
Europeana
Europeana, a portal compiling 2 million objects from 1,000 institutions in the EU, went live today. Or it tried to go live and failed, with Wired reporting that it’s been receiving 10 million hits per hour. Nice! Europeana says that the goal is not only to merge existing resources but to promote further European digitization efforts. Just the idea of having a single portal for so many different resources is fantastic, and I’m quite intrigued by this statement: You can use My Europeana to s

Company Sues Facebook Over Copyright Infringement
A Columbus, Ohio based technology company is suing Facebook for alleged copyright infringement charging that the social networking site is using technology it developed to run the site. Leader Technologies maintains that it developed a patent that Facebook uses to manage and store electronic information. Leader says it applied for the patent in 2002 and is seeking damages and an injunction against Facebook for what it calls willful infringement. read more
The mother of all green events…
Keep next Thursday free if you can (and if you’re in London). There’s a very good event about to go down and it looks like it’s going to be packed out. Ben Patten, our friend over at Greenbizevents, just sent this in. Ben started up around the same time as Greenbang and we’ve been working together for more than a year now… “Dear Dan, This is an update on Green Strategy, which takes places next week on Thursday 27th November 2008. We hope you will join us for this thoroughly informative day,
In Brazil 85% of Internet Users Do SN
BRAZZIL MAGAZINE -- Nov 20 -- comScore's data show that 85% of Brazilians age 15 and older who accessed the Internet from home or work computers in September 2008 visited a social network, up from 76% in September 2007. Why you should check your site analytics daily
Site analytics are not just for Web developers, advertising execs or managers. No, they are especially important for content producers. I’ve heard many people say that they never check site analytics of they only check them a monthly basis. You should check daily. The purists will tell you that monitoring site analytics will cause you to produce shallow content that is link bait. That somehow all you’ll start creating is Britney Spears stories. Those people don’t get it. Don’t listen to the
The Age: Social networking can help business
The Age has just published an article titled Social networking can help business, based on our Executive Insights into Enterprise Social Network Strategy report, released yesterday. Much of the article describes the report, and takes some of the executive quotes used in the report. Then at the end, taken from a follow-up interview with me, it says: Chairman of company Future Exploration Network Ross Dawson said there had been a transformation in the corporate attitude towards social networkin
Nepotism and Networking
Ah, nepotism. Glorious, glorious nepotism. In case Ciaran’s reading this, nepotism is nicely defined here. Nepotism happens out of necessity in this industry. You get gigs doing blogging, consulting, conference speaking, and who knows what else (even those pesky real jobs) through knowing the right people. Obviously you need to back things up with actual ability, but many times, what gets you IN at first is definitely who you know. I’m taking a serious risk here by paraphrasing something said
Paris and Benji are Finished!
It seems that we get to follow the many loves of Paris Hilton once again as she has broken up with her most current boyfriend-turned-ex, Benji Madden. I guess the Good Charlotte bandmember was just too controlling for dear Paris. I guess it wouldn’t take much, since she’s probably never been given any boundaries of any kind in her whole entire life. From FOXNews, “The hotel heiress hasn’t been seen with the “Good Charlotte” rocker for over a week, and both have been hitting up Hollywood hotsp
What’s 15 years in techno-years?
What’s 15 years in techno-years? November 20th, 2008 by ChromeTruckNutz I would say at least 100. Seriously, this was like reading about the Model-T while studying contemporary car design. It’s still a car, sure, but hardly any components besides the very basics are still relevant. Being a fairly active gamer most of my life and participater in social networking sites, I don’t feel like I learned a single thing from this article. It was like being lectured on how to walk at 16. I wish I co
Google Lively Not-So-Lively After December 31
Lively is this.. thing.. by Google where it was some kind of mashup/3D/cartoony (literally) way of using social networking. Or was it just chatting? Or was it a game? Nobody quite knows for sure, however.. ..it sucked and always did from day one. Second Life was there first, it didn’t need to be recreated and that’s that. That being the case, Lively will be gone after December 31 2008. It won’t be missed. Post from: PCMech. Helping Normal People Get Their Geek On And Live The Digital Lifest

Spiritual Pyramid Schemes…
We live in an age of networks. Most of us know that we can’t do anything truly visionary on our own. And if we can, our visions are likely too small. The internet (which is only about 4000 days old) has accelerated our capacity to network with one another. The internet allows grassroots tribes to come out from nowhere, upending established institutions. You’ve seen this with the Obama comapaign, and you can see it in the rise of new church networks and associations as denominations decline
More Proof That Gadgets Are Good for You
More Proof That Gadgets Are Good for You November 20, 2008 3:15 PM | 0 Comments See -- as if we needed confirmation -- gadgetry is good for you. Well, maybe I'm taking a small step here, but a new study from the MacArthur Foundation has found that all those hours that teenagers spend socializing on the Internet are not a bad thing. (And how to they get access to the Internet? Gadgets, of course!) "It may look as though kids are wasting a lot of time hanging out with new media, whe
Is this your Approach to P2P Lending? Bad Idea…
Is this your approach to peer-to-peer (P2P) lending financial social networks (FSNs)? It is for many banks. We hear the following almost daily from banks from around the world: “P2P volumes are low, so I don’t have to worry about it. Right?” No - this is changing. Some FSNs that support P2P lending are reporting an increase in uptake in Q3 relative to Q2 of this year, by as much as ~50% for the number of borrowers joining and ~40% for the number of lenders joining. P2P lending is not
Internet Marketing vs Social Marketing
It’s a tough distinction to understand for many in the field, so I can imagine how it seems to those just entering the world of internet marketing and social marketing. I have been involved in one heavily over the past several years, and interested in being involved in the other. So what is the difference between internet marketing and social marketing? Internet Marketing Internet marketers can be recognized by one service they all have ont he tip of their tongue: aweber. I’ll get to
