Twollow! Twollow! I’ll Leave Ya, Tomorrow!

Twollow! Twollow! I’ll Leave Ya, Tomorrow! November 20th, 2008 by GCI Canada Staff Being a control freak on who I connect with (namely people I search out and manually click “follow” or “invite”), services such as Twollow are not my cup of tea. Snip from the developer’s blog: “Twollow lets you specify up to five different keywords which you can track and then automatically follow any Twitter user who uses those words.” Someone followed me the other day; I visited their blog and saw a post ab

Asimov’s on podcasting fiction

Author James Patrick Kelly1 has a new column out on Asimov’s. It’s a follow-on piece to a story he did on podcasting about three years ago. This time around, he’s including conversations with Mur Lafferty, J.C. Hutchins and Tee Morris. This article not only covers the evolution of the podcast novel format, but also delves into the role that social media plays to the author taking this non-conventional route. 1 - Yes, we used to have an his audiobook Burn available as a free serialized downl

Have You Read Born Digital?

It’s in my stack of books for winter reading and wil be included in my classes next semester. In the meantime, I’m enjoying Jenny Levine’s report of author John Palfrey’s talk in Chicago:   5 characteristics 1. “I blog therefore I am” express their identity online and offline - they don’t distinguish between the two avatars as another version of identity one difference is “subscribe to *me*” 2. multitaskers a lot of debate over multitasking and what it is, but they’re doing multiple thi

A burning question for advertisers who claim to “get” social media

Why aren’t you attracted to online communities? More specifically, why don’t you find value in reaching a small number of people who may all very well have interest in your product? I am no advertiser, but it seems to me that if I knew I could find 50 people in one location, who typically come back to that location at least 3-4 times per week and I knew for certain they were all in the same profession or had a single shared interest that dominated the conversation, I’d want to be there. Part

Thursday News Threads

Protect Ya Neck — and benefit from excellent arch support. RZA, GZA, Raekwon, U-God, Ghostface Killah, et al. have paired with Fila to produce Wu-Tang-emblazed Weathertech boots just in time for 2008’s dismal holiday buying season. It’s not the first pair out for purchase; 2007 marked the limited edition C.R.E.A.M. shoe, which sounds far grosser than it actually is. In any event, the Clan will be at the Showbox SoDo on December 1; they released their documentary Wu: The Story of the Wu-Tang C

“Three Killer Social Media Case Studies from SMC San Francisco”

On Tuesday night, the San Francisco/Silicon Valley Chapter of the Social Media Club hosted a night of social media marketing and PR case studies. That’s right, six companies pulled together their best campaigns from the last couple months and threw them into PowerPoint presentations.  Some might call this a geekfest, we at socialTNT call it heaven.  All the presentations were amazing, but we’ve chosen some of our favorites to bring you notes from the front line. Said Zahari, Former Chief Editor, Tells Of Original Utusan ‘Spirit’

Said Zahari, Former Chief Editor, Tells Of Original Utusan ‘Spirit’ From Nutgraph via Susan Loone: When I took over the editorship from Yusof Ishak, Utusan played our role in serving the Malays. But we wanted it to be not just the Malays. Back then, the paper was in Jawi. For our second phase we planned Utusan Melayu Muda, in Rumi script. Through Rumi, we would reach non-Malays; we could serve the Malayan people. Kepentingan rakyat was our focus back then: democracy, social justice, freedom

How to Build a Simple Community News Section with Delicious and FeedBurner

A growing number of blogs are now including community news sections, including DesignM.ag. My experience with the news section is that it’s a great way to encourage readers to get involved by submitting items, and it can also reward them with a link and some traffic, not to mention that it gives readers the latest blog posts that might interest them without needing to search through tons of blogs to find them. The community news is especially popular on design and development blogs, but not as m

Web 2.0 Storytelling: Emergence of a New Genre

Great article in EDUCAUSE by Bryan Alexander and Alan Levine. Alan writes the CogDog Blog, one of my favorites. http://connect.educause.edu/Library/EDUCAUSE+Review/Web20StorytellingEmergenc/47444 A story has a beginning, a middle, and a cleanly wrapped-up ending. Whether told around a campfire, read from a book, or played on a DVD, a story goes from point A to B and then C. It follows a trajectory, a Freytag Pyramid—perhaps the line of a human life or the stages of the hero’s journey. A story

More Proof That Gadgets Are Good for You

More Proof That Gadgets Are Good for You November 20, 2008 3:15 PM | 0 Comments See -- as if we needed confirmation -- gadgetry is good for you. Well, maybe I'm taking a small step here, but a new study from the MacArthur Foundation has found that all those hours that teenagers spend socializing on the Internet are not a bad thing. (And how to they get access to the Internet? Gadgets, of course!) "It may look as though kids are wasting a lot of time hanging out with new media, whe

Using Social Media to Drive Holiday Sales

This year more than any other, social media is going to play a huge part in driving holiday sales.  According to a recent survey from ecommerce consulting firm Guidance, 30 percent of online shoppers say that the best way to find bargains and discounts is through shared links, comments, or social sites. And if that’s not enough to get you on the social media bandwagon, another recent survey found that a whopping 85 percent of consumers want to interact with companies through social media platf

The Next Step In Pro-Social Media Mobilization

Next month Facebook, Google, YouTube, MTV, and Howcast will sponsor a summit to mobilize young people against violence and oppression. It will take place at Columbia Law School from December 3-5, bringing together leaders of youth organizations from around the world. The global network, called the Alliance of Youth Movements, aims to craft a "field manual" on how to create social change using online tools. For those who can't attend in person, the event will also be streamed live online by How

It’s not 2.0bama. It’s You.0

I’m surprised that so many social media professionals are discussing how the Obama administration can “use” social media to govern, how it can engage in “two-way” conversation with The People. The very formulation, which posits a top-down approach to government, misses the whole point. Let me explain this from the viewpoint of how I advise clients–some publishers, big companies, small ones, non-profits, bloggers and so on–to deal with social media. I believe the approach applies to government

An Open Letter to Big Brands Everywhere

Big Brands of the world, You should be embarrassed. You should be so embarrassed that you are under your desk rocking back and forth because rocking is the only way to express how absolutely embarrassed you are. You don’t know what I’m talking about, do you? Of course you don’t. For you to know you’d actually have to be paying attention to what’s going on around you, and we both know that you’re not. I didn’t have time to comment on this yesterday (too much work and such), but according to H

Internet Marketing vs Social Marketing

It’s a tough distinction to understand for many in the field, so I can imagine how it seems to those just entering the world of internet marketing and social marketing.   I have been involved in one heavily over the past several years, and interested in being involved in the other.   So what is the difference between internet marketing and social marketing? Internet Marketing Internet marketers can be recognized by one service they all have ont he tip of their tongue:  aweber.   I’ll get to

If You Buy This Book, You Are, How Shall We Say, "Not So Smart"

What a waste of effort on the "authors" parts. What a waste of money if you buy it. Everything you need to know about blogging I already wrote here.

11% of Young Adults Watch TV Online Weekly

18-to-34s who watch TV online at least once a week spend an extra hour with media every day, compared to their same-age counterparts, says new Knowledge Networks data, reports Market Watch. Shoutlet Makes Social Media Easy

Social media is one of the fastest growing marketing areas on the Internet today. It allows marketers and business owners to advertise and market in ways that were unheard of 5-10 years ago. Every major corporation (and many small businesses and start-ups) out there is currently using social media. The problem inherent with social media is the fact that a proper social media campaign can be extremely time-consuming, very costly and may require a large team of people. Let’s face it -- most of us
